EQUESTRIAN PROGRAMS

The Salem Equestrian Center provides both therapeutic and recreational mounted and un-mounted Equestrian opportunities.  Since 2000 we have been an accredited riding facility through the Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA).  The Salem Equestrian Center employs highly experienced and educated CHA certified instructors who can confidently instruct riders in a variety of disciplines including English and Western Pleasure, Beginning Hunt Seat Equitation over fences, basic Dressage and trail riding.

OUR MISSION:

The Salem Equestrian Center is a CHA Accredited riding facility which offers a unique experiential learning environment.  We provide a safe, positive and encouraging space in which students can learn the art of horsemanship and valuable life skills.  A therapeutic focus in our lesson curriculum teaches riders the importance of trust and responsibility, good leadership, and excellent communication!  Founded and operating on Christian principles, The Salem Equestrian Center’s goal is to contribute positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being of all participants.

OUR VISION:

In addition to the Recreational and Therapeutic Riding Lessons currently offered, the Salem Equestrian Center seeks to develop its Therapeutic Equestrian Programs to further serve the Maryland Salem Children’s Trust INC and its surrounding community.  While we are currently a CHA Accredited riding facility, our ultimate goal is to achieve accreditation as a PATH Premier Riding Center by December 2018 and expand our therapeutic focus.

In the Summer of 2016 The Salem Equestrian Center, in cooperation with the Salem School, will launch an EAL Curriculum called Journey of the Spirit Horse, published by Strides for Success INC.  This program utilizes the horse as a member of the teaching team and offers an interactive learning experience focused on character skills and English education.  Educational focuses are on reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Our goal is to continue to develop and expand this program yearly, eventually working with the local public school systems to further service At-Risk youth in our community.

By December 2018 we hope to have added Equine Assisted Psychotherapy to our programs.  This program will combine the efforts of a Mental Health Professional, such as a Psychologist, a horse and a PATH certified Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning to offer Trauma Therapy on Salem Campus.  EFP is proving to be a non-threatening and engaging treatment of individuals with PTSD, and our hope is to enable our horses to further help individuals in their healing process.

A long term goal of the Equestrian Center is to re-model its facilities to further accommodate a Hippotherapy Program working in conjunction with local Physical and Occupational Therapists to further serve our community in a unique way.
